Thanks for your music,

Penny Brodie

Hi Ralph. I met you briefly at the Lake George Jazz festival last month and you gave me two of your cds. I have played them often during my jazz radio show and they sound great on air! I would love to interview you sometime live on the phone during my show, "Mingus Moments" on a Wednesday evening sometime between 7-8PM.
The radio station is WVKR in Poughkeepsie NY. We are a student and community run independent radio station. The interview could be about 15 minutes. Interested? Contact me.
Perhaps you knew or heard of my husband, who passed a few years ago, Hugh Brodie. He was an incredible composer, tenor and soprano player and singer. (He was cousin to Ella Fitzgerald).
Thaks Ralph. Regards, Penny

Markus Teuton

to Ralph

Dear Ralph, my name is Sarah McKenzie.

I hope you are well.

I am a jazz singer/pianist/composer and a Berklee College of music Alumni. I greatly admire your playing and particular your work with Art Blakey and Betty Carter. I have a concert at Scullers Jazz Club with my quintet featuring Troy Roberts and Dan Wilson. I wanted to see if there was any chance you would be interested and available to play on this October 3rd, 2019? It would be a great honour for us to play with you.

If you were free could I ask what fee you would require? My music is coming from the tradition of straight ahead jazz, but I write a lot of my own tunes too. In Europe I have worked with Gregory Hutchinson, Reuben Rodgers, Pierre Boussaguet, Donald Edwards, Dezron Douglas amongst others.

I truly hope to hear from you soon.

All best, Sarah McKenzie.

Simon Pilbrow

Hi Ralph,
My wife and I came to the Melbourne Saturday night gig at Bird's Basement, and thoroughly enjoyed the music - this was no surprise of course, having been a longstanding appreciator the enormous legacy of Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, and having a high regard for the six of you as individual musicians and your combined dedication to the legacy of this great musical institution and its music - which has inspired so many great musicians and their careers and generated so much music with such a wide influence. Thanks for keeping the flame and being Art's worthy successor as drummer and leader. A big commitment - which I know you love doing - but I am acknowledging the effort, time, energy, intellect, emotion, creativity, organisation and leadership that goes into it. We as members of the audience appreciate it and it is our privelege to enjoy hearing you all live in our city!

I am listening as I write to the GenNext Big Band recording - particularly listening out for "Pensativa" which we heard last night (thank you!!) and I mentioned to you my connection with the Clare Fischer family and his son Brent Fischer (with whom I collaborated on an album two years ago). It is great to hear this fine young big band and thank you for inspiring and directing these promising young talents and helping to inspire them through the Blakey/Messengers' legacy.

I hope your tour to Beijing is equally inspiring. Travel safely!

Kindest regards,

Simon Pilbrow, Melbourne, Australia

"I loved the way Jamil played bass, so I asked him to join my band. His great bass playing and personality contributed much to my music." B.B. King

About the Book:
George Joyner, Jamil Sulieman, and Jamil Nasser are three names that appear on the records of Phineas Newborn, Lou Donaldson, Ahmad Jamal, Red Garland and many more. These three names identify one jazz bassist, composer, and jazz advocate, who made an indelible mark in the jazz world for over fifty years. Upright Bass chronicles his evolution from a young bassist on Beale Street to a top-flight bassist on the New York Jazz scene. Miles Davis harbored curiosity about the environment that produced Jamil and three Memphis musicians he hired in 1963. Nasser's narrative captures the untold stories of two piano giants Phineas Newborn and Oscar Dennard. He also shares anecdotes about his mentors: Papa Jo Jones, Lester Young, Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, and Ray Brown. Moreover, Jamil describes his decade long tenure with Ahmad Jamal, which included a life-threatening imprisonment in South America. Finally, we learn about his plight as an outspoken jazz artist fighting for greater union representation, the perils of heroin addiction in the music industry, media access, healthcare, and self-ownership.

About the Author:
Muneer Nasser is a musician, author, songwriter and historian. Born on June 3, 1967 to the late, great bassist Jamil Nasser, Muneer Nasser’s exposure to the jazz idiom was early and powerful. He has had the unique opportunity to meet many of the jazz greats that his father knew. Muneer’s lifelong commitment to jazz history evolved out of these encounters. Consequently, he has read over one hundred books, magazines, and conducted informal interviews with jazz masters whose answers stimulated his quest to document jazz history. Watch out for Muneer’s new CD release A Soldier’s Story available December 2018.

Hey ralph! Just thought I would drop you a note to shout out and say hello. Larry Crockett and I spoke the other day and he mentioned that he read some news on your site or facebook that you are battling illness. Please know that I am thinking of you and my wife (you met her when we saw each other at the Blue Note) and I have you in our prayers. Stay strong as I know you are and always have been. You are in our thoughts, hearts and prayeres.

Larry is in town by the way. As I believe you know, he has lived in France for many years and currently resides in Paris. He is coming to visit and is actually going to be doing a clinic in NYC on April 30, 2017.

I speak to Michael often and most recently, last week. He is , as I am sure you can imagine, the same and he is doing very well. As is Rhonda.

If you are going to be doing anything music wise here in the New Jersey area, I would love to come and hear you and your band (or whoever you are perfoming with) and certainly catch up.

Again stay strong. Hoping to talk to you soon.

take care and All the Best!

Have just visited CD Baby looking for the Aggregate Prime CD, but it was not listed. Where can I purchase a hard-copy CD of this recording? I'm an old school jazz fan and like to hold media in my hands, so downloaded files do not satisfy me, but I'm always willing to purchase a disc.

Hi Ralph,

Thank you for checking in on Colescott! (I heard you called.)

I can't come to Boston to be with him (inhave to take care of his little brothers) & I have been very worried since he first called last night but he seems to be doing better today.

I'm so sorry he can't make your gig this week, I know he was really looking forward to it.

The doctor said he should wait a week or two to play bass to make sure his brain has a chance to heal from the concussion. I know this is going to be a bit of torture for him! But he's so lucky to have his musical community and the Berklee community as a whole. Thank you for being part of that.

* Drum Masterclass Video Opp (Antonio Sanchez, Adam Rogers, Ari Hoenig, Etc.) *

Hi Ralph,

My name is Adam Small and I run, a website with acclaimed musicians making masterclass videos. We have a bunch of great cats involved already (Antonio Sanchez, Adam Rogers, Ari Hoenig, Dave Liebman, Jerry Bergonzi, Larry Goldings, Ben Monder, Mike Stern, Kenny Werner, Jonathan Kreisberg, Russ Ferrante, Bob Mintzer, Peter Bernstein, Walt Weiskopf, Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Haslip, Mike Moreno, Johannes Weidenmueller, etc.) and I wanted to see if you'd be interested in filming one. The deal is artist favored and 60% of the money from your videos would go directly to you. I can also give you a $500 advance on the day of the shoot.

Since the site caters to professional musicians, you can pretty much discuss/demonstrate anything that you feel is important about what you do. Given your experience it's really wide open. The site is if you want to check it out. It's been getting a lot of traffic and sales and I would obviously love to have you involved because you're an amazing musician. If you're interested, filming would be very easy and it would only take a few hours. I currently live in Boston, but I'll be moving back to NY in January, so I can even shoot it at your home if you prefer since I have a mobile filming/recording rig. I know that you did a video for jazzheaven a while back, but I know that you have a lot more you could talk about ☺. Please let me know if you'd like to chat about the details.

I have featured a lot of great music on there throughout the years, including music by many of your colleagues... Mark Whitfield was one of my teachers at Berklee, by the way.

I received your new album recently and would love to feature some tracks on the show. The station I work for,, asks artists to fill out a small release form, so that we can play their original tracks on the air. Could I send you this form - I\'m not sure what\'s your e-mail address, that\'s why I\'m using this contact form.

Thanks a lot,

I pre-ordered Dream Deferred at bandcamp, where it said it would be released 11/4. So far, I'm not seeing it @ bandcamp, and they have not responded to my e-mail. Have you released this full album yet?

Looking forward to it,

Peter Aucott

Chris Prawdzik

Dear Mr. Peterson,
Just ordered your Jazz Heaven DVD yesterday and have enjoyed the 24 hours of free viewing online as well. I really appreciate your energy and enthusiasm for music, and your ability as a teacher is obviously of the highest caliber. At one point in the video, you mention students having to learn 50 tunes in 15 weeks for one of your courses. Is that a list of tunes you could share with a mid-40s music lover and, I guess I would call myself a drum hobbyist with a big passion for jazz?

Please let me know if this is possible. I look forward to your reply.

I am interested in private lessons, please let me know if this is an option?

Dear Sir,

it is an honor for me to write to you, and I am doing it because I would like to ask you a favor.
My name is Edoardo Gomiero, I live in Verona, Italy, I am a student at the triennial Jazz course in the conservatory of Mantua and I am preparing my thesis which is based on the comparison between the Teacher and the Performer.

I am particularly interested in this argument because I have dealt, even if in a small scale, with being both. In order to collect material that supports my thesis, I have searched for information without any success, so with the guidance of my teacher Marco Volpe, I have written a small questionnaire that I am giving out to all the musical professionals that I can reach.
Until now, I have received many answers from Italian artists, and I thought that it could be interesting to confront the approach on the argument by artists of different cultures and origins.

I kindly ask you if you would like to participate by replying to my questions and help we complete my project, in that case I would be enormously grateful and honored.

Kind Regards

lizzy bennie

Hi, I came across melissa Aldana's recording of your song 'Tears that I cannot hide' and I really wanted to perform it for my final year recital at univeristy as I think it would be a beautiful additon to my set. I'm personally struggling with working out the chords on her track as I can't tell if the pianists chords are in inversions or just extensentions. Is there any way of sourcing the lead sheet to your song? I have already messaged Melissa and she told me to see if I can source it from yourself. Many thanks, Lizzy

Dominik Raab

Please give more details about the open rehearsal/master class on April 4th at Johns Hopkins. What building and room will it be held in? Is there some maximum number of participants? I am writing a short notice for the April issue of the Baltimore Jazz Alliance newsletter, and we will also post a notice on the BJA website. So please give as many details as you can about the workshop and the concert. Thanks.

Gabriel Bar-Cohen

Hi Mr. Peterson,
We did a lesson back in May and I texted you in July and a few days ago to plan another one but I'm not sure it went through for some reason.. (You might've been in Germany for the Meinl Drum fest). I was just wondering when we could do another lesson? I am in Boston at Berklee the weekend of October 10th for an open house tour. Would sometime around then work?
P.S. Loved the footage from the Meinl Drum Fest. Sounded incredible!

Ray Lombardo (Fulton MD)

How are you doing Ralph?
I have all your stuff....can you tell me what other recordings you have done in the last year as a sideman. "I need more Ralph."
Hope all is well. I had to play last Friday, otherwise I would have seen you at Ande Musik, Balto.

Tyler Conner

Hello Mr. Peterson my name is Tyler Conner and I'm 20 years old and from Baton Rouge, LA, I've been playing drums for 16 years. I would take say I am a big fan of your playing. I recently came across a video of you doing a masterclass type thing at The Memphis Drum Shop. One part you talked about how you gave your students a list of drummers and records to check out. I was hoping that you could send me a list of records you feel are beneficial. I play and listen to jazz consistently. I am just looking for some new material to check out to hopefully broaden my knowledge.

Thanks and God bless
Tyler Conner

Gabriel Bar-Cohen

Hi Mr. Peterson,
I saw you in concert last thursday at NBJP and we talked about taking a lesson and you gave me your card and told me to text you, which I did. I'm not sure if you saw it or not as I am sure you are very busy, but I just wondered if you teach lessons anywhere near NJ. I would really like to have the chance to study with you.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

How long is Mr. Ralph Peterson staying in Vienna for the concert at the Viennese Porgy and Bess (09/03/2015) and where can he be reached during the abidance on Vienna (Hotel Josefshof)? It would be about a short oral Interview (2-5 minutes) for JazzEcho.

Would it be possible to arrange a short meeting on March. 08 or 09?

I am looking forward to hearing from you-

Kind regards,

Veronika Stollnitz.

Robin Brown

Ralph inspires me as a drummer and I would like the opportunity to see him live. Do you have any dates for 2015?

James Wallace

Dear Mr. Peterson,
James Wallace here, director of music at St. Mark's School in Southborough. You may recall that you played out here with the Bill Pierce quartet last year. I am writing in regard to my student whom you may remember, Daniel Green. He was so very inspired by hearing you that night and his playing was transformed just by listening. Daniel is doing well, just won the judges choice award at the Berklee Jazz Fest, but I am concerned that he is not getting the kind of inspirational teaching he needs. I'm wondering if you might consider giving him an occasional lesson, perhaps once a month or as your schedule allows.
Please let me know if this is something you might consider.
James Wallace

Dear Ralph,
It's very last-minute, but I was wondering if you're available for a workshop in the Netherlands on the 9th or 10th of February at our Conservatory (one of the teachers that was coming had some touring issues). We have this project with all drum students from all 3 locations in the East part of the Netherlands. We can take care of your flight ticket. Hope to hear from you! Thanks, Tibor

I will be interviewing Tyrone Brown for Jazz Inside Magazine soon and i always end with a few questions from other artists. Might you have a good question to ask of Tyrone(or two for me to pick from) and I will include you? It could be about anything that readers might like. Perhaps a question that's been asked of you?

Any plans to tour Ireland? Please say yes

Eileen Kent

Hi, I know so little about music except to enjoy it as a listener. Bur I want to tell you I so enjoyed listening to you Friday night on NPrR. You had such a gentle way about you. I loved when you spoke of your dad and how you were mentored by great musicians. And now you care to mentor others.
I think its great you still love to create new kinds of music.

I think I might even take up piano because it seems music gives such reative pleasure. We never really had the opportuity to learn a musical instrument when I was growing up...No spring chicken, I'm going to do it!!!!

Cheers and thanks for all you do!!!

Cheers,Eileen Kent

Ralph when a young adult ask you a questions regarding performace, the Old adult should respect the fact that the younger lad is offering some respect. This Holds True when it is a Black Youth. However, when you were asked a simple question you gave one of the most Dumbest answer a Black man can give a Black Youth. You are NO TS Monk or Charli Persip by a long shot, those to gentleman have the highest regards for the youth you dissed last week. Know who is playing is NOT an interest to these young kids today. My advice to you is to stop kissing your ego and reachout to ANY BLACK CHILD that comes to you for advise. That young man is my SON Pendelton Ptrane King and he is outstanding on the SAX. If u got and CLASS return the email.

love your music! your website is very difficult to read!

I requested Ralph's latest CD for my radio show three times from DL Media and never got it. Why hire a publicist if no one will send the CD? I have championed Ralph's music for years and can't even get the CD for airplay? BTW, I released 2 CDs on Ralph on the Evidence Label. Jerry Gordon, PO Box 8328, Radnor, PA 19087

hope have great time !!! Thansk for your time !

Jerry Gordon

Hi Ralph, as you know, I am a big fan of yours--as owner of Evidence Records, and as a popular DJ on WPRB Princeton. I have contacted DL Media 4 different times to get a promo copy of your latest CD, but to no avail. I always talk you up, sing your praises, but if I can't even get a promo copy despite so many requests, I guess the CD will not be heard nor praised on my radio show. Best, Jerry Gordon, PO Box 8328, Radnor, PA 19087 What is the reason I can't get a CD from them?

Gary Walker

Hi Ralph,
In addition to my work at WBGO, I'm also New Jersey writer for Hot House Magazine. I'm doing a short piece on your August 28th performance in Atlantic City. Can you tell me who will be in the band and what you might have planned? My deadline is this Saturday, July 13th.

Hi Ralph you are great...what about jazz Drumming lessons and teaching?
Thank you

Tracy Beamon

I am such a fan of you, your knowledge of the art of drumming, your music and the way you educate. Now I've only watched online, so that tells the empression you leave. What would it take for me to acquire some educational time? In other words, I want this knowledge. I want this understanding. Oh I am a 51 year old drummer who hated jazz as a kid, who loved funk and r&b, but I now have an affinity for jazz.
Hope to hear from you. Mr. Tracy Beamon

Kendall Carter

I was wondering if I could get the lead sheet to the tune "Art of War". I am looking to play this tune with one of my combos for school.

Thanks in advance

Jeff Johnson

Mr. Peterson,

I had a lesson with you last year after the Virginia/DC Day of Percussion. I am glad to say that I am really enjoying working on the concepts, especially the Rudimetal Ritual ideas.

I would love to take another lesson with you when you are in the DC area again. I also remember you talking about a list of tunes - 50 standards, I believe - that you incorporate in your curriculum at Berklee. Do you happen to have a PDF of that list that you can email to me? If so, I'd appreciate it. I look forward to meeting up with you for another lesson in the future.

Jeff Johnson

Was that you with ms lauryn hill at the bowery in november?

jeff ellwood

I really dig the big band arrangement of The Art of War. Is it available to purchase?

Hi Mr. Peteson,
I came across some of your work via youtube and really enjoy your playing! Considering your work as an educator, I'm hoping you can help me a question I have. When you play the jazz ride pattern, do you space the notes evenly, or do you add more space between the 2 and ah 3 and the 4 and ah1?
For example is the pattern: 1 2 ah 3 4 ah 1 OR
1 2..........ah3.....4.............ah1. Are the notes all evenly spaced? I hear cats talk about how you should have a wide pocket, a fat sound, but I don't know how that translates into the spang-a-lang pattern. Also, I read online that you teach at Berklee. Are you available for private lessons in the Boston area?

Harry Himles

Hi Ralph, I live in Northfield NJ and have heard your name for years. I have played professionally for many years. I'm a little on the old sie but till hve a very big interest in learning. I watched some of your videos and wonder if you are ever in the area. Please let me know if I can hook up with you sometime. Thanks

Richard Lott

Ralph my name is Richard Lott. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your quartet at Twins in DC several months ago! I especially dug your clarinet player Felix Peikli he was great. Is he on any other recordings that I might be able to find? I really want to hear more of him. Once again I really enjoyed your performance. Are you going to come to the Bohemian Caverns again anytime soon?

Annie Steinberg

Mr. Peterson,
I was referred to you by Justin Faulkner, who suggested that you would be the best teacher for my college age son in Boston (at Boston University).
Might you be open to giving him a few lessons (to start)? I would like to surprise him with the opportunity to study with you if you are teaching non-Berklee students privately. He'll be back in Boston between mid January and May, and could accommodate your schedule.
Thanks very much for considering.

Mike Dag

Hey Mr. Peterson,

I am a physician and have been playing drums for many years (as much as my busy schedule would allow). I don't know if you offer private lessons but would love the schedule some lessons I am a huge fan and was blown away by your DVD...I live in Brooklyn, NY but would be willing to travel.

mike Dag

Tracy Beamon

Mr. Peterson, I am a 51 year oldfrom Jersey who learned a littlle about drumming as a kid. But now I've been playing again for the past 6 years and I'm now on this quest to seek as much knowledge about the drums and drummimg as possible.I'm playing Gospel, but I have an affinity for jazz. Any suggestions?

Sherm Schlar

I'm a fan of your music and know most of the great musicians in the Hartford area. I went to your web site to get more info on your upcoming gig at Firehouse 12.

I noticted that your website is fairly dated and doesn't really equal the quality of your musicianship. No heavy sales pitch, but if you're thinking about a new web site, check us out.

Was curious if Ralph was interested/available for a recording session with Oleg Kireyev, Tom Harrell, myself, and TBD bass on 10/28 at Water Music in Hoboken and 2 hr rehearsal the day before. We're a small company and not sure where he'd come in but figured was worth an inquiry in case is down time for him or looking to fill days.

Many thanks,

Eric C Hughes

My name is Eric C Hughes and I am a member of the PAS Drum Set Committee. This year I am acting chairman of the committee but my usual responsibilities on the committee include coordinating the Oral History Project which is archiving video-taped interviews for research and education. These interviews are a great way for the subject to talk about their life and their family history as well as the how's and why's they became a musician.

I have done over 60 Oral History interviews since 2010 and I will be at PASIC this November to interview more drummers. I'd like to speak with you but I understand your schedule may be filled. The interviews usually take about 30-45 minutes (or as long as you want to talk) and they are done in the Indianapolis Convention Center on the second floor.

I appreciate your consideration in this matter. I know it seems early but November will be here before we know it. Many thanks again!

I am a former student of Mr. Ralph Peterson. I was wondering if he ever does lessons in Philly or New York anymore? Thank you,

Dan Watkins

Dear Mr. Peterson: I saw you 9 June in Pittsburgh, and I write now to pay my respects and to say how uplifting and joyous I found your music to be. You swing harder and play more musically than anyone I've heard in years. Also, I am pleased that you work hard to bring along younger players; gving back in this way is just another example of your broad and generous spirit.

Awesome gig at the Jazz fest in Pitt w/ sean Jones and the Duality Perspective Sextet! Who was that amazing alto player that you jammed with?

Tom May

Hi - I just discovered you through KPR radio. Very, very good stuff. I am really a progressive rock fan, but have always had "open ears" and continue to expand and lean towards jazz and avant music.

Have had the luck of growing up in the music business here in KC, MO and getting to know some of the jazz guys, including the wonderful Metheny (talented family!) family.

Look forward to hearing from you, and wondering if you tour with your original music?

Nicole Yee

Hello Mr. Peterson,
My name is Nicole and I am an undergraduate student at Rutgers studying Finance. My peer, Benson, and I are both currently taking a class called Afromusicology where we learn about the various forms of African-American music: spiritual, gospel, blues, folk, and jazz; as well as African and Western influences: role, development patterns, and function in sociocultural context. We are assigned to complete a final research project, and would really appreciate it if we were given the opportunity to interview you for our project. Through research on The New Brunswick Jazz Project website, we came across your name and have noted that you will be performing in New Brunswick next week Thursday April 23rd. Please contact me back ASAP of your availability to hold a short (15-20min) interview either before or after the show. Thank you.

Best Regards,
Nicole & Benson

Hello! My name is Min, and I am currently at student at Rutgers University. I am currently taking a class called Afromusicology and we are currently learning about jazz. My groupmates and I were interested in attending your event at Makeda next week (4/25). We were assigned a paper to do an oral history about an accomplished jazz musician, and we would be so grateful if you could squeeze us in for an interview before or after your performance next week.

We look forward to hearing back from you!
Thank you for your time!

Arto Louis Eriksen

Dear Mr. Peterson

I'm a 14-old drummer from Copenhagen, Denmark.
I'm coming to N.Y. in the beginning of May to celebrate my confirmation, or as I prefer to call it: my drumfirmation.

An important part of the plan is taking a few drum lessons, and you are my number one priority :)
We - my dad and I - are in town, in Manhattan, between May 4.-10.

I'm into second line, funk and jazz drumming. With the greatest pleasure I have watched your videos about jazz drumming.
Please let me know if you give lessons. And if so, if you have time for a lesson? How much it will cost me? And where it can take place?

All the best

Arto Louis Eriksen

My name is Yumi Yi and I am currently a student attending Rutgers University. I am taking an Afromusicology class and one of the main components of the class is the study of jazz, which is an area of music that I am very interested in. My project for this class involves having an interview with a jazz artist or musician. I was hoping that I could get the chance to interview you. It can be through Skype or even a phone call, but I just need a recording of our interview. I saw that you will be in New Brunswick tomorrow (April 25) to play a show. I will be attending and it would be great if I got to meet you then. Please let me know if I am able to interview you. It would really mean a lot to me if I could have a little bit of your time from your busy schedule.

never heard from you hope your set went well

james gordon williams

Dear Mr Peterson:
I remember opening up for you years ago at Birdland, circa 1997. I was playing in a duo with a bass player. I would like to request your permission for a brief interview. I am writing a music dissertation on black improvisers and wanted to get your opinion on how your work represents strategies of resistance. Your perspective on your work would be invaluable. I have interviewed musicians like Greg Osby and Stanley Cowell so far if you need references. Perhaps we could talk about the Reclamation Project.
Thank you for your time and consideration of my request and you can always call me if you have any questions at 646-234-5952

Simon Barker

Dear Ralph
My name is Simon Barker, I'm a drummer living in Sydney, Australia. I've been a huge admirer of your music since first hearing you in the mid-eighties and continue to be greatly inspired by your ongoing creative output.
As a yourng drummer in Australia, the incredible music you were making in the USA seemed a world away and I gradualy found myself looking at the drums from the perspective of my actual life experiences which were touring and collaborating with musicians throughoutt Asia and the Pacific. Although the music I was making became more obviosly related to this region, the overall drive was always inspired by your incredible, energized music making.
So I'm writing to say thanks for the inspiration you have given me over the past three decades, and am sending a couple of musical offerings of music I make with old friends in Korea and some solo drumset music. If you get a chance to listen I hope you enjoy.
The first bandcamp link is to Chiri, a trio featuring extraordinary pansori singer Bae Il Dong and trumpeter Scott Tinkler. The second bandcamp link is to a collection of solo drumset improvisations inspired by my time performing and collaboratin in the Pacific and North Asia.

I hope to get the chance to hear you perform live sometime...thanks again for all the wonderful music.

Simon Barker

Hi Ralph,

I hope this finds you well. Do you teach privately? If so, I would love to take a lesson, or two or three or more, from you. I live in Brooklyn, NY, but I will be up in Boston in March, on the 28th and 29th, if you might have time on either of those days. I've been playing drums for about 25 years.

Thanks Ralph, looking forward to hearing from you,
All my best regards,

Sasha Elliot

Love the CD. Caught the gig at Twins in DC back in October...groovin'!
I saw that you had an upcoming show at Bohemian Caverns in early February. I was wondering if you had any availibility for a lesson sometime during your weekend in DC. Look forward to hearing from you.

Rickey Fischer

I can't tell you how much I love your video. I am a player and teacher in New Orleans. Like yourself I started out a funk, fusion drummer. I studied jazz with Mr Ellis Marsallis in the nineties. And now at 44 I'm back heavy into Blakey, Elvin, Tony. I ran across your video and it re informed things I've learned, forgotten, and never learned. I am also a vibist, xylophonist, so there is conceptual beauty. Bottom line I realized watching your video how much the excitement love of the drums comes out in your sound. Very animated. I sold cars for a living to supplement my income. I knew emotions rub off,but the fiery spirit in your playing is amazing. Hopefully you will do a clinic in New Orleans someday. Peace have a Blessed New Year. Rickey Fischer

Marion Dokes-Brown for Bryan K. Withers(Greatest Music Admirer since 3rd grade

Dear Mr. Peterson:
I am writing this note on behalf of my son Bryan Withers, who is by far your greatest fan/admirier since he began drum lessons when in elementary school.
He has had the pleasur to meet you once in New York as heaccompanied me on a conference. His single greatest life moments was when he chatedwith you as a teenager and listen to you play at two sets while we were in New York. He has every piece of music you have ever recorded. He has kelp in touch with you via e-mail and website. His most prized possession is a copy of your autograph and phone number which he keeps on his phone picts.
I write this long note to see if I can arrange for Bryan a surprise thank you for the selfless act he has given me and his family over the years. Ilearned that you were in Fayetteville AR last month and tried to arrange for him to attend but his work at the Children's Theater in Little Rock made it impossible. This was the closest you have been to his home city ever. He lives in Little Rock, AR and works as a musicianwith the Children's Theater, teaches drum lessons, andgigs as a jazz musician whenever possible any the state with several jazz grs. Bryan has received music from you and can play perfectly every note(in my opinion). He has every available video youhave ever made and can emulate you in every way. As i said you are his Idol!
I have a very selfish reason for taking up your time in this e-mail. I am Bryan's mother. Bryan is now 42yrs and certainly an outstanding young man and has been all his life. Not just my opinion but ithers will attest to it as well.
Bryan is a gifted young man and hasshared his musical gift in church, in thecommunity and with others like himself as he teaches young students yearafter year with great success and very little attention or recognition. The men he play with admire his talent and the person he is as well. I simply feel Bryan might have missed his opportunity to do greater things with his talent because he choose to assist his family and never relocated to get that musical opportunity. Please don't misunderstand his thurist to perform with greater musicians, he has been performing in many venues through the years, I simply think he is greates when her plays jazz and has very few oppertunities to do so.
Bryan has had several losses in the death ofpeople important to him and I sense a declain in his joy. I want say depression, but I willsay he has voiced a feeling of dfailure or lack of accomplishment, however, you and I know accomplishment is a relative idea.
Bryan is a good and decent person and I would like to offer him so insiration through you if nothing more than a phone message or personal e-mail or any other contact we might be able to afford him. I know that you are a veryt busy man in your music and University work, but I also know , as i have followed you with my sons interest, that you are a caring and sharng musician an noted with the charitable work that yu do in giving back. I am in no way asking for anything that would impose onyou and your time. I'm sure Bryan would be upset if he knew I was contacting youin this way. However, This has been on my mind and heart to do for years, and there.... I've don it!
Bryan's phone no is (501)960-0694, he teaches Rosen Music (501)666-0814, e-mail
I can be contacted at (501) 882-3101, (501) 960-3503.
Thanks for allowing me to take time out of your busy schedule to make this request.

Dear Ralph Peterson,

My name is Alexandre Daigle, and I'm going to audition at Berklee College of Music on November 19th in Boston.

I was wondering if you would have time to talk about music and Berklee, if your schedule would permit it. One of the reasons I am applying and looking forward to attending Berklee is because you are a professor there, so it would be hugely beneficial if you had some time to talk with me when I am in Boston for my audition.

Hello Mr. Peterson,

my name is Jonathan Han. I'm 19 years old and a freshman jazz studies drum set major from Chicago. I will be attending Berklee's 5-week program this summer and was wondering if you are going to be available for a private lesson during the summer? I read that you studied with the greats Art Blakey and Elvin Jones (one of my all-time favorites) and am thrilled even at the thought of having a chance to study with you! I understand you are a very busy, working musician. If unfortunately, you aren't available, could you please refer me to another Berklee instructor/professor's contact, who might be in town during 5-week? Thank you so much for your time.. Hope to see you soon!

Hello Mr. Peterson/Ms. Ente,

I am a student (drums) at Box Hill Institute in Melbourne, Australia currently doing my final year. My first semester recitals will be coming up soon and i am hoping to perform 'Respect for Truth' from the Tests of time album. With your blessing it would be greatly appreciated if you could send me a copy of the lead sheet for it?

george maroulis

Dear Mr. Peterson,

Several years ago I enjoyed your stellar performance at New York City's Small's Jazz Club. It didn't take me long to recognize your brilliance behind the kit. I left that evening in awe and told several Jazz aficionado friends of mine about the remarkable show I attended the prior night. As time passed and age took its course I—regretfully—couldn’t recall your name (although my girlfriend is just about sick of my recollection of your performance that one evening). Several minutes ago, for reasons unbeknown to me, I suddenly remembered your name and promptly searched the net—from work—for any upcoming gigs. To my dismay your website revealed that I missed a recent show. Kindly include my email address to your email distribution list as I would very much like to see you perform again. Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
George Maroulis

James Osborne

Afternoon Ralph, as a drummer you've been a big hero of mine for years, I've seen you play many times over the years and bought your records. I have to say how much I LOVE the new one Outer Reaches. It's one of the great records of the last 10 years, and I've listened to it many times. Now that I'm living in Australia, I don't get to see my heroes as much, although it does seem that people do swing by here (pun intended) on occasion. Anyway thanks for all the great music, you really are inspiraitonal. I heard you were doing a DVD, can't wait. And the drums and cymbals on the record sound so great, as they always do. I'd love to know what your primary ride is, it's glorious.

All the best and Merry Christmas to you and you family

If this is at all possible please let me know at your earliest convenience.

Hi there,

We noticed that you have not made a DeliRadio profile yet to promote your upcoming show at Scullers Jazz Club. We know you are busy and would like to offer you our free service to make the profile FOR YOU. Just click here to fill in a very brief consent form and we will get this done for you asap.

If you click on DeliRadio Boston, you’ll be directed to a station of all the bands in DeliRadio playing upcoming shows in Boston.

Remember that having your profile earlier rather than later will get you a better promotional effect for your show at Scullers Jazz Club, and just in general.

If you prefer to make your own profile, here are easy instructions to do so.

The video showing the different ways to play syncopation has you playing Paradiddle-diddles. How are you doing that? This is a new one on me as I have done some of the other Dawson version. I cant figure this one out. Please help!

Thomas Giampietro

Hello Ralph,

My name is Tom Giampietro and I am the current drum set instructor at Umass-Amherst. I am very much looking forward to your upcoming concert with Tia Fuller here at Umass.

I have long admired your playing and the fact that your own groups always sound so original and fresh.

You may or may not remember this but about 12-13 years ago I sent you a CD of my playing and you were kind enough to give me some very honest (and great) feedback through an email conversation.

I am also a good friend of a former student of yours from the D.C. area--Leland Nakamura.

Anyway, I don't know what your travel schedule is like for next week but if you any time I would love to hang a bit and maybe get something to eat or a beverage.

Thanks for your time,

Tom Giampietro

Hello Ralph!

I saw you yesterday in the house of blues!

It was great, I love what you do.

Do you teach private lesson outside berklee?

Hope to see you soon.

I do the transcription column for DownBeat, and I am submitting Jeremy Pelt's solo on "the Vicious Cycle". I've figured out the changes, but some of them are ambiguous, and I feel I would do more justice to your composition and Pelt's solo in my write up if I knew how you concieved of the chords (and therefore what Pelt was playing off of). If you agree and would like to send me a lead sheet,, you could email it to the above.
Thanks so much,

Tara Buzash

Dear Prof. Peterson,
Thank you so much for coming and giving us the workshops at Rutgers. They were amazing!

do you teach privately? huge fan of yours. i'm a professional drummer who's largely self-taught. just moved to salem massachusetts. looking foward to the dvd sir.

Lynne Brodsky

Hi Professor - I did not want to let too much time go by before dropping you a line to say that I enjoyed your conversation on the plane to Denver last Thursday, and I trust your concert went well. Also thank you for your gracious offer of tickets to the concert. As I expected, the young people we were visiting wanted to "hang out", and not go to any organized function.

After I got back to my hotel, I amused and amazed myself watching You Tube videos of you playing the drums. My my! Those drums were steaming right out of my mobile phone, and those drumsticks must heat up in your hand, whenever you play.

On Monday evening NPR, I heard a story about consultants whose job is to manipulate Google searches so that a certain website or story comes out on top of a search, or if desired, is buried on page 5 where no one looks. Apparently there are a lot of these consultants out there, and all sorts of buisnesses and politicians utilize this sort of service. So I don't imagine it would be too difficult for you to find someone to fix things so that comes out on top, whenever one Googles Ralph Peterson.

So, best regards, best results with your health issues, and happy jazz-making.

Earl MacDonald

Hi Ralph.
I read on your web site... "Big Ass Band" coming soon. If you are looking for someone to collaborate with to write arrangements, I'm interested. I'd be happy to send you my latest big band CD if you'd like to check it out. Our mutual friends Kenny Davis, Ralph Bowen and Mike Mossman play on it. Josh Evan plays in my 10-piece band in Hartford.
Send me your address if you'd like a copy of my disc.
